Biography


​Poonam Basu is a professional film, TV, and theater actress currently based in Los Angeles. She began her professional career in New York City, making her off-Broadway debut with The Vagina Monologues at New World Stages. She earned her Actors Equity Association membership with her role as a muslim Juliet in Theater 2020’s Hindu/ Muslim rendition of Romeo and Juliet. Right before she moved to Los Angeles, Poonam landed her first role in a feature film with The English Teacher directed by Craig Zisk and starring Julianne Moore, Michael Angarano, Greg Kinnear, and Nathan Lane. 

Since making the move out west, Poonam has appeared on NBC’s Parks and Recreation and Bad Judge, FX’s Baskets, The Young and the Restless ​ on CBS, The 90th Annual Academy Awards on ABC, and most recently, she just finished shooting Splitting Up Together on ABC. She can also be seen as the bubbly young dancer, Danna Kapoor in the feature film, 1 Chance 2 Dance, and coming this summer, you can hear Poonam's voice in the animated Uglydolls movie! On stage, Poonam was nominated for the Golden Performer award at the Hollywood Fringe Festival 2014 for her role as Darla in the original play, Riot Grrrl Saves the World. 

In addition to acting, Poonam delights in engaging in a variety of creative pursuits. She is a writer, currently working on several screenplays, poems, and songs. She loves dancing and is a skilled choreographer. She also has a passion for kids TV with a Masters degree from New York University in Educational Children’s Programming. 


Fun Facts: Poonam loves math, potatoes, and the NY Giants. She is an avid animal lover and a proud pluviophile.
